Hoover Dam, The World's Largest Dam

Hoover Dam, once known as Boulder Dam, is the world's largest dam and an engineering marvel at the time of its construction dated back 1930's. It bestrides the mighty Colorado River in Black Canyon, which forms the border between the states of Arizona and Nevada. Constructed in the 1930's, the concrete arch-gravity structure was intended to debar flooding as well as provide much-needed irrigation and hydroelectric power to parched regions of states like California and Arizona. At 726 feet high and 1,244 feet long, Hoover Dam is one of the largest man-made structures in the world and one of the world's colossal producers of hydroelectric power.

Today, the dam draws nearly a million visitors a year. Tourists are not only intrigued by its enormous size and gargantuan hydroelectric generators, but also by the elegant Art Deco designs on the dam's four towers, spillways, and power plant. In here you'll also find a plaque commemorating the 96 workers who died during the dam's construction.

When we first got into this world renowned landmark, we were flabbergasted not only by the awe-inspiring elephantine site, but as well as the massive tourists that went to visit that day. Looking down to the very steep vertiginous dam (remember, 726 feet high!!), indeed some of my fellow visitors felt nauseous and queasy. But despite that, the hoover dam is definitely a site to be blogged and talked about by so many people. It's such a remarkable experience to be able to catch sight of the world's largest dam.

Ok, this is me posing again. Peace.
I'm with the twins! Oh. they're not really twins but they do
look alike. Don't they?

Look at the crowd.

And that's dad. Posing right in the middle. Talk about vain.

Ok,  so I'm also vain.

London Bridge

From the famous song 'London bridge is falling down', we finally step foot on the legendary London Bridge. But before we go into the details of the little journey we had in the city of Lake Havasu, Arizona, where the London Bridge is located at now, let's have a brief history of how the famous bridge came to be.

In 1962, it was discovered that the London Bridge was "falling down," sinking into the Thames because it was not adequate for the increase in traffic. The City of London decided to put the 130-year old bridge up for auction, and construct a new one in its place. Robert P. McCulloch, founder of Lake Havasu City, AZ, submitted the winning bid for $2,460,000 in 1968. McCulloch spent another $7million to move the London Bridge to Lake Havasu City which took a total of three years. The bridge was shipped by boat 10,000 miles to Long Beach, California. From there, it was trucked to Lake Havasu City where it was stored in seven-acre fenced storage compound. Then the bridge was reconstructed. The reconstructed London Bridge was dedicated in Lake Havasu City on October 10, 1971 with many British and Arizona officials participating in this event that drew 50,000 spectators.

Indeed the London Bridge is one of the famous tourist spots not only in the state of Arizona, but in the United States of America. Coming from the famous nursery rhyme that I used to sing back in kindergarten, I couldn't actually envisage that I would be able to walk back and forth onto the bridge while gazing at the beautiful sights that the Lake Havasu city has to offer. Why don't you check some pictures out? :)
